The characters on the other hand aren't exactly deep but are vividly written and likeable but Hawkmoon, the protagonist on the other hand is extremely bland and robotic. I suggest being familiar with at least 2 of the other 3 characters or else this will be a confused mess of a read. The trilogy on the other hand is a more sombre affair, it is intricately linked to the multiverse mythos and gives a conclusion to Hawkmoon's story but also to Elric's,Corum's and Erekose's sagas. From this it goes to a post-apocalyptic road trip, pirate shenanigans, dimension hopping and ends in good old-fashioned climactic battle scene which feels satisfying and compelling as it was built up to it. The former is fantastic adventure plot, the Dark Empire of Gran Bretan wants to conquer the world and only Dorian Hawkmoon and his chums can stop them. The plot is split into two parts, the first is a tetra-logy called The History of the Runestaff and the second is a trilogy called Chronicles of Count Brass. The writing is good, MM's prose is standard nothing evocative in it but since these books are short and he has an excellent sense of pacing and capable of writing atmospheric scenes, it makes for an enjoyable reading experience. I like this kind of thematic building because it gives room for the author to create cool mind candy and Moorcock does it really well. In midst of all this is the Eternal Champion trying to restore balance in law or chaos's favor.

The world in a never ending cycle of struggle between Law and Chaos, new races trying to gain mastery over the domains and the old ones, past their prime and time dying a slow grim death. Steampunk, Sorcery and of course multiverse-hopping shenanigans.Īn aspect of Moorcock's stories which he does it so well, is profound sense of melancholy in his works.

The setting is vividly developed,on the surface it is your standard post-apocalyptic setting formed due to an event called "The Tragic Millennium" but the author makes it interesting by infusing it with strong Science Fantasy elements.

Hawkmoon was quite different from Elric or Corum, more straightforward and simple but a jolly good read nonetheless. The Dorian Hawkmoon yarns were my next stop in my quest to read all the Eternal Champion sequences written by Michael Moorcock, which means roughly most of his prolific output.
